Raymond James Cares

August 20, 2018

Throughout the month of August, Raymond James brings awareness through a campaign called "Raymond James Cares," The firm has been committed to giving back to our communities in which we live and work since being founded in 1962. This year, the Raymond James branch in Holland, MI was able to team up with an organization called Starlite Shores Family Camp in Hickory Corners, just outside Kalamazoo, Michigan.

For many families who have children with cancer, time spent with other kids can be extremely limited. Starlite Shores is a free camp, committed to giving children with cancer the chance to play with other kids and it allows parents time to relax and recharge.

As a retreat family when you arrive at the camp you are greeted with a welcome parade, and are paired with a host family who is committed to loving on and serving you all week. This year, Mark Zichterman our branch manager and his family were able to be a host family, and invited the rest of the branch to participate in events throughout the week.

As volunteers, we were able to help with the Flip Flop groups that were held in the mornings after breakfast. The Flip Flop Group is a time where children are placed into age appropriate groups, for all sorts of activities, games, crafts and bible lessons. The age range we were paired with was boys 5-7 years old. You could hardly tell which of the kids might have cancer and which ones don't. There was so much energy and everybody around was just so grateful and full of joy.

The mission at Starlite Shores is to serve families living through childhood cancer with the love of Christ, through an environment of relaxation, renewal, and restoration as a family. A typical day involves breakfast, fellowship, Common Ground for parents to have discussions about the issues they face in dealing with their child with cancer, Flip Flop Groups, lunch, family free time, dinner and nightly activities. Throughout the week there are theme nights, a ladies spa, a dad's day out, and time to rewind.

We just want to say thank you to Kevin and Carmen Diekevers and all the Starlite Shores staff for allowing us to volunteer at the camp! It was an amazing and humbling experience.
